The best place to find these fish are in the clear cold lakes. They also thrive in rivers and streams with moderate currents. Smallmouth are not particular to habitats that are less than 25 feet deep nor do they thrive in murky, brackish water. Consequently they are rarely found in ponds or shallower lakes.
