Angling, Goldeye Canadian anglers view goldeye as an excellent fish for smoking. You can catch them in the quiet, slow-moving waters of large rivers and also the muddy shallows of large lakes. Goldeye are popular with fly fisherman but can be caught using other angling methods. They feed mostly on insects, snails and other fish and are a food source for other larger fish like northern pike and walleye.
